Dr. Phobia, Sorcerer Hero

Dr. Phobia, Sorcerer Hero

As a little girl, Cecilia’s daddy hit her mommy. A lot. By the time mommy took Cecilia and her sister and ran away, Cecilia Persephone Turner had already learned how much there was to fear. She grew into a timid child, withdrawn and anxious. One day, as a teenager, she ran into the scary woman that lived in the scary house up the street. The old woman said she was a witch (all the kids knew that), that she was dying (the kids didn’t know that), and that she had to pass on her knowledge to an apprentice before she died (no one believed Cecilia about that). She told Cecilia that magic would help her face her fears, and overcome them, but she neglected to say how harrowing the apprenticeship would be. The two journeyed to numerous nightmare worlds, and faced demons both mental and physical. In the end, Cecilia was no more, and Dr. Phobia was born.

  • Personality: Cecilia’s teacher taught in the traditional shamanic way, which is a nice way of saying she interspersed deep, cosmic wisdom with frequent shocks to the mind to capture a heightened state of attention. Cecilia received a lifetime’s worth of training in a few short years, and the experience changed her completely. Once, she was a scared little girl; now, she’s practically an Avatar of fear itself, which is what caused the Fool to invite her to join the Street Knights.
  • Goals: Cecilia wants to destroy the monsters that prey on the weak, and make New Amsterdam a safe city once again. Teaching monsters how to fear is what she does best.
  • Obstacles: Cecilia often forgets that fear can’t solve every problem, and finds it hard to show compassion and mercy when it’s needed. She’s so strong now, she’s almost forgotten what it’s like to be weak.
  • Central Contradiction: Cecilia has changed so much in a short time, she sometimes forgets she wasn’t always a creature of terror and darkness. The things of her old life seem like they belonged to someone she once knew, and not all that well.

Story Use/Notes: Dr. Phobia is so scary, she often seems more villain than hero! The heroes could be called on to investigate rumors of a monster that’s scaring people to death in a bad neighborhood, walking through walls and appearing out of nowhere.
