Fray, Mutant/Symbiote Villain

Fray, Mutant/Symbiote Villain

At first, the gift of monstrous strength seemed like a godsend. Why wouldn’t it? Once, Rodney Cunningham was just a smart, put-upon nerdy kid, brainy but ordinary. Soon, Rodney Cunningham found that he could push over cars, jump hella high, and beat his classmates at wrestling every time. Until one day, when Rodney found that although his muscles were denser and more powerful, his bones were not; he tried to punch through the brick wall of an abandoned building and broke his arm in four places. As he’s grown stronger, Rodney’s life has been a living hell, as he knows he could accidentally shatter all his bones in a moment if he’s not careful. Undergoing an “experimental procedure” by a doctor associated with the Wellspring, Fray can at last live out the promise of his incredible power after years of living as a cripple. Now he’s a helpless pawn of the Wellspring, stuck doing their dirty work. If he doesn’t, they’ll remove his symbiote … forever.

  • Goals: Fray wants to live a normal life, and maybe even enjoy being a Mutant with Hyper-Strength. He’s tired of always doing what the Wellspring wants.
  • Obstacles: Fray is hampered as a Wellspring agent by his utter reluctance to do the ruthless things they want him to do. He’s a well-meaning kid at heart.
  • Central Contradiction: Fray is incredibly strong, and would love to be a hero, but because of his Mutant frailties resulting in his brittle bones, he can barely move. It’s only with the help of an alien lifeform that he can even hope to live a normal life, let alone use his powers to their fullest potential.

Story Use/Notes: Fray makes a great sympathetic villain. The Wellspring is well aware, after their testing, of the Albionite symbiotes’ vulnerability to ionizing radiation. After giving Fray his symbiote, they blackmailed him into acting on their behalf. And if he didn’t toe the line, they’d kill his symbiote, rendering him a cripple once again.
