Unstoppable Dog!

Unstoppable Dog, Mutant Animal Hero

When William Barton developed radiation powers, he wasn’t initially able to control them well. He emanated hard radiation for weeks, until he learned to control his powers. But before he left, his faithful golden retriever Hardy absorbed a massive dose of radiation, and wandered off into the woods to die. The transformation was painful, and took weeks. Bill assumed that Hardy died of radiation, and grieved. But Hardy gained most of the same powers as his master, and a few more besides. He became smarter than an ordinary dog, as well. Hardy quickly found that Bill Barton was the hero that humans called Unstoppable Man, and naturally wanted to emulate him.

His master was everything to Hardy, and Hardy followed him discreetly, helping out where he could. Unstoppable Man often suspected “someone was watching out for him,” but he never suspected it was his old dog. The worst day ever came when Agamemnon Abraxas killed his master’s family. Hardy was away, and couldn’t help, and blamed himself for the disaster.

Then came the Metahuman Massacre; Unstoppable Man went crazy, and it took most of the heroes of Earth-Omega to take him down. And they almost didn’t, but … Unstoppable Man’s “guardian angel” turned on him. His faithful dog drained away his radiation powers at a critical moment in the battle, so the heroes could defeat him.

The only hero that knows of his existence is Unstoppable Girl, but she’s sworn to secrecy. But every once in awhile, a wrecked car full of terrified passengers is pulled out of a lake, or someone else is saved, and someone catches a glimpse of a dog, one with Unstoppable Man’s cape …

  • Obstacles: Although he can fly and redirect visible light around himself, he’s still a dog. He has problems approximating human speech, and it’s tough for him to type or open doors.
  • Central Contradiction: Unstoppable Dog knows that he’s an outcast among outcasts; he’ll never have a place in the heroic community. And he’s wracked with guilt over betraying his beloved master, even though he was living up to Unstoppable Man’s ideals. As cliché as it is to say, he failed to be a man’s best friend, but he is mankind’s best friend.

Story Use/Notes: Unstoppable Dog is a goofy sort of hero, an animal with human-level intelligence, and powers. He’s good for weird adventures, involving Unstoppable Girl, or Unstoppable Man’s legacy.
